Chapter I
Do You Know Puerto Plata?

If you have never visited Puerto Plata, just follow the knowledgeable guide that I am. It will be my pleasure to take you on a tour of this picturesque town, which in ten years gave my wife and I, serenity and joie de vivre. However, forgive me if I do not provide the historical data that are infallibly given to tourists such as brothers Christopher and Bartolomé Columbus designing the city in 1496 or Nicolás de Ovando founding it in 1502.

As for me, my goal is to describe Puerto Plata as I see it and to awaken within you the irresistible desire to discover this lovely city that fascinates me. Puerto Plata faces the Atlantic Ocean and to its back it enjoys the protection of the Isabel de Torres Peak, a green mountain with an altitude of 2600 feet. To reach the summit, you can use cable-cars; however I must warn you that the passenger cabin rises almost vertically. Nevertheless, you will not regret this unforgettable ride across the sky.

Once at the top, you will have the pleasure to see a giant statue of Christ which is a bit similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro, and also beautiful and relaxing gardens. There is another site of Puerto Plata which fascinates me just as much, and that I visit at least once a week. It is the famous Central Park, which despite its last remodeling, remains a magical and exquisite space to relax. When you are lucky enough to find an available bench in the shade around ten o'clock in the morning, you will settle there with pleasure, and for a while embark on the wings of a sweet day dream.

It is also pleasant to embrace with a single glance the surrounding wonders: La Glorieta, a stylish pavilion with a circular belvedere, the Cathedral of San Felipe, the Culture House, an imposing Victorian building more than a century old, town hall, etc...

When I am in Central Park, I only have a few steps to take in order to run my errands such as pay the electric bill, my phone bill, visit shops and bookstores, to stop at the display of a fruit vendor, to go to the bank. I will not say more and it is my conviction that the Central Park will amaze you, and you will experience the febrile animation of the commercial district.

And just as pleasant is the residential neighborhood, the old one of course, with its maze of narrow streets and antique houses. Some of these houses are so old that just by walking in front of them, pedestrians will feel come up to their nostrils the strong smell of old, worm-eaten wood. Modern communities of Puerto Plata also deserve a visit. Some of the beautiful villas in those neighborhoods are so large and so splendid that one often remains speechless in front of them. The magnificence of their gardens strikes astonishment and admiration. These mansions have nearly as much luxury as genuine palaces or castles.

To change the venue, I invite you to stroll with me along the Malecon. Recently renovated, this beautiful three kilometers promenade along the ocean is lined with almond trees. In the evening, newly built cafes, one after the other, equipped with powerful audio devices play at full volume the latest merengues while providing their consumers with all sorts of delicacies and the inevitable, cold beer. As far as I'm concerned, when I go to the Malecon, it is to be caressed by the exquisite sea breeze. I also enjoy the colorful spectacle of all those walkers who, in some respect, dance, sing, and shout a lot more than they talk, especially when the alcohol fumes starts to rise to their brain. On weekends, the party starts early. Entire families arrive at the Malecon as early as three o'clock in the afternoon, with chairs, food and drinks, not to forget the essential radio equipment to make a racket of all devils.

Now, I will try to satisfy the curiosity of those who, quite often ask me if I get along with the people of Puerto Plata. Absolutely. I can tell you that the people of this city are remarkably communicative, extremely affable, and highly sociable. These are the three qualities that justify the sincere friendship which binds me to several of them. I have so many friends in Puerto Plata that my son jokingly said: "Papi, before long, they will elect you Mayor of this city."

My wife and I, sometimes regret having discovered too late this charming city. Just imagine our delight. We live among compassionate, smiling people who do everything they can to make our lives pleasant and easy. It is often said that one can genuinely feel comfortable only in his own country. That is debatable. My wife and I, we are so integrated in Puerto Plata and the lives of its people that we feel totally at ease in this enchanting city, where we are like fish in water.
