Chapter XVII
My Friend Felito

If I am not mistaken, Miguel Angel Martinez, aka Felito is Puerto Plata's oldest taxi driver. Although being a discrete and a bit secretive man who does not talk about his age, I was lucky, having coaxed him a bit, to get that from this old friend valuable information, namely that he came into the world in this exact city, on November 26th, 1926.

For those unfamiliar with Felito, I'll describe this affable octogenarian in a few words and put him in his usual place of work.

Let me say straight away that Felito, the friendly Felito is accurate and like clockwork. Each morning, religiously at the same time, that is to say at seven o'clock sharp, this tireless worker comes to the Central Park, driving his large gray car as long as a minivan, and extremely wide. Despite its thirty years of existence, Felito's car is still robust and works quite well, except that the more it ages, the greater its voracious appetite for gasoline gets.

After parking his massive and ruinous work instrument at the corner of Duarte and "Separacion" Felito dismounts, and sits down on a park bench, waiting for his first passenger.

Felito, a man of medium height whose gait is as energetic as a twenty year old young man, seems to embody a peaceful bliss. His face always wreathed in an amiable smile, his gaze soft and compassionate, this tireless fellow is obviously proud to continue providing his services to the community, despite his advanced age.

Last year, the association of taxi drivers in Puerto Plata thought it was time that its oldest member began to enjoy a well deserved rest. To this end, Felito was retired with a weekly meager pension.

"I can not stop working, Felito told me . "All my life I have been a taxi driver, and if suddenly I fall into inactivity, I will be bored to death. On the other hand, since my wife departed to the other world, about four years ago, I have no interest in staying at home all day".

For this reason Felito continues to practice his career, he does so only to entertain himself. Entertainment which, ultimately, requires a considerable expenditure of energy. In fact, driving such a cumbersome car is also not an easy task. I know what I am talking about because I am a loyal and regular passenger of the comfortable and spacious gray cab of this old friend.

It should be noted that, given the narrow streets of Puerto Plata, the old driver experiences great difficulty in maneuvering the large vehicle without scratching parked cars, and without bumping against the edges of sidewalks.

Cautious to the extreme, and assessing difficult areas through which can pass his impressive car, our driver honks incessantly, and drives at an incredibly low rate of speed, which irritates passengers, eager to reach their destination.

As for young motorists who are forced to follow this large gray turtle, which they can not pass, they often explode with rage, and hurl rather disrespectful words to "this senile driver slowing traffic, and that would be better off to go and finish his days in an old folks home'. Acting wisely Felito turns a deaf ear, preferring to continue his work quietly.

Recently, I met my friend Felito sitting sadly on a bench in Parque Central.

- What happened ? 'I asked. You look worried. Did Your taxi break down?

- Not at all. It works quite well but given the exorbitant price of gasoline these days, and the increasingly frantic greed of this jalopy, I prefer to leave her to rest at home.

In pronouncing these words, which betrayed a resignation mingled with dejection, Felito turned away from me his eyes clouded with tears, and turned his gaze to the colossal gray clouds that were drifting in the sky.

- It will rain this afternoon, he told me.

I smiled with compassion, and after a warm handshake, I walked away and left him alone with his deep melancholy.
